How Do I know What God Is Saying To Me?

One of the questions I get asked most often is:

“How do I know what God is saying to me?”

I remember asking the same question when I first began my walk with Christ.

I would hear people say, “God told me this,” or “I felt God leading me here,” and I would wonder if I was missing something.

The truth is, learning to recognize God’s voice takes time.

Just like any relationship, the more time you spend with someone, the more familiar their voice becomes.

When I first started reading my Bible, I didn’t always understand what I was reading. But I continued showing up every day. Before opening Scripture, I would pray:

“God, what are You saying to me today?”

Then I would slowly read and pay attention to what stood out.

Over time, something began to change.

Certain verses would jump off the page.

Scripture would speak directly into situations I was facing.

The wisdom I needed would often be waiting for me in the exact chapter I was reading.

I realized that God was speaking all along I just needed to slow down and listen.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that God primarily speaks through His Word.

His voice will never contradict Scripture.

If you believe God is leading you somewhere, but it goes against what the Bible teaches, that is not God’s voice.

God’s guidance always aligns with His truth.

Think about it this way:

If a stranger called your phone, you might not recognize their voice.

But if your best friend called, you would know immediately who it was because you’ve spent time with them.

The same is true with God.

The more time you spend reading His Word, praying, and sitting in His presence, the more familiar His voice becomes.

Sometimes God speaks through Scripture.

Sometimes He speaks through a sermon.

Sometimes He uses another believer to encourage you.

And sometimes He simply places a deep conviction on your heart.

But one thing remains true:

The closer you grow to God, the easier it becomes to recognize His leading.

If you’re struggling to hear God’s voice today, don’t become discouraged.

Keep praying.

Keep seeking Him.

Keep asking:

“God, what are You trying to teach me today?”

He is faithful to guide those who seek Him.

Reflection Questions

  • Am I creating space each day to hear from God?

  • What Scripture has stood out to me recently?

  • Is there an area of my life where God is asking me to trust Him more?

Prayer

Lord, help me recognize Your voice above all others. Give me wisdom and discernment as I spend time in Your Word. Teach me to listen, trust, and follow wherever You lead. Draw me closer to You each day and help me grow in understanding of Your truth. Amen.

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27

Bible Study Tip

Before reading your Bible, pause and pray:

“God, what are You saying to me today?”

Then read slowly and pay attention to what stands out. God’s Word is often where His voice becomes the clearest.
